Governments must understand how to navigate the future; managing and regulating disruption in a timely manner. But before they can move forward, they must understand where they are starting from and where they want to end up.

Australian governments are embracing many of the capabilities that will help them prepare for the future of mobility by taking an increasingly data-centric, agile, and customer focused view of the transport ecosystem.

However, public sector agencies still primarily function as regulators and operators of mobility services in urban markets.

They need to start applying these capabilities to how transport is planned and delivered by providing platforms that facilitate collaboration between public and private mobility operators.

State and Commonwealth agencies typically sit between Stage 2 – Engaged and Stage 3 – Uneven Transformation on Deloitte’s Future of Mobility Maturity Curve. They evolve maturity through undertaking mobility trials, but often without the overarching vision to guide broader internal transformation or certainty around dealing with impending disruptions.
