Wanted: Your Advice for the Class of 2015

Next month, I will deliver commencement speeches to thousands of graduates at University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business and my alma mater Brooklyn College. I look forward to attending commencement events every year. After all, there’s no one more full of energy and enthusiasm than a 22 year old clutching their diploma, with the possible exception of their proud parents.

I want to do something special for these two commencement speeches, something I haven’t done before. Rather than just mining my own career and experiences for advice for the class of 2015 – I want to gather insights from a diverse range of people, at all stages in their careers. That’s where you come in.

Please answer any or all of the following questions in the comments section below.

  1. What do you know now, that you wish you knew when you were 22?

  2. What advice do you have for the class of 2015 as they embark on their careers?

  3. How can this year’s graduating class truly make an impact that matters as they enter the workforce, and plan their careers?

I look forward to reading your input, and I’ll be sure to report back in a future blog post. Thanks so much.

Barry - I was one of the very fortunate graduate students at the University of Notre Dame Mendoza College of Business that had the opportunity to have you as our Commencement Speaker. I thought your speech was on point - you touched based on key areas that not only were relevant for graduates but the overall audience that was in attendance. If possible, would you mind sharing your speech with me? I would like to have it not only as a keepsake from this special day but also to reflect back on it from time to time to remind me of the words of wisdom you shared with us. Thank you so much!

Gotta love the disclaimer. Has it really gotten to this?

Be an entrepreneur, never think like an employee. Even if your goal is to climb the corporate ladder always think beyond "how do I get my next promotion" to "how do I create value in a way that makes a positive difference".
